Canon 5DS & 5DS R: Max Resolution

Test: the new Canon EOS 5DS, 5DS R breaking all previous records in the resolution of a camera with a small image sensor. There are two machines designed to deliver maximum clarity and detail. But are they for niche?

Outside, there is no big difference between the two newcomers and the existing 5 d Mark III. The differences at the inside of the black shell. The sensor is normally developed and manufactured by Canon and it’s a CMOS sensor with 50.6 Megapixels.

The differences between the 5 d Mark III and 5DS/R consists primarily of things that changed to take advantage of the new sensor as well as possible – with such a high resolution is one of the biggest problems you may run into camera shake.

Because of that, Canon has done its best to prevent different types of vibrations in the camera. Among other things, Canon stabilized up construction by stopping into a sturdier base plate in the camera. Shooting man on the stand (which this camera is a bit meant to be used with) is attached to the stand directly in the new base plate which allows the vibrations that might get the road decreases.

The other big difference and the news is that Canon is made about the entire mirror mechanism to minimize vibrations. Previously, the mirror goes with a spring and then released when the shutter button is pressed. When the mirror is released as clearly and of course even when it lands again. The new system consists of two cams that are constantly in contact with the mirror in its motion, it causes vibrations that can occur in the other system does not get a space here. These two new initiatives to secure detail that the new sensor can perform.

Higher sharpness, higher risk

The difference between the 5DS and 5DS R is available in front of the sensor. In an ordinary construction, as for example in 5DS, low-pass filter consists of two sheets with different characteristics that are fastened together to reduce the risk of moiré. In 5DS R has taken away one of these discs and replaced it with a filter that will remove the effect of the disc. It gives a higher sharpness, but also a higher risk of moiré. A similar solution is used by Nikon at D800E, and appears to work well there. The difference between 5DS, 5DS R is about as big as the one between D800 and D800E.

To manage manage all this data set has Canon stopped in dual Digic 6 processors in both cameras, it makes the burst shooting still comes up to respectable (considering the dissolution) five images per second, that is the same as that of rival Sony A7R II.

Professional House 1DX has a donate focus module to 5DS/R, that means it has 61 focus points of which 41 are cruciform. That stopped in this focus module also offers, of course, that it should not be any major problems with finding the focus, it should not take a particularly long time.

You don’t want to use all 50.6 Megapixels found in 5DS, 5DS R, it is possible to crop the image. Both 1, 6 x 1, 3 x origin is available. You can even crop it down to 1:1 format if you so wish. Raw files is also available in three different sizes, the most common full sized filvarianten and then a medium (M-raw) that end up on 6480 x 4320 pixels and a small (S-raw) at 4320 x 2880 pixels. If you choose any of the cropped modes is masked viewfinder to show which mode you are currently using. It would be incredibly annoying to have photographed in wrong pruning without knowing it.

The man immediately notice when shooting with the new cameras is that they are noticeably quieter than e.g. 1DX or 5 d Mark III. The sound has disappeared in the same way as the vibrations. It’s like how the new mirror mechanism moves softer than its predecessor. One might imagine that the camera should be a little heavier than 5 d Mark III because it provided the House with a weapon base plate. But according to the specifications weighing the new cameras are actually less. Impressive!

Niche products

-5DS and 5DS R will not replace the 5 d Mark III, said Anders Sävås of Canon cameras when he presented to me. They are instead think that niche products for which demand considerable detail rendering and image quality. And it shows when you look at the specifications. Sure, the cameras filming, but it is not so impressive video capabilities. But there are tradeoffs Canon had to make when the craftsman after resolving the Hunter’s yardstick. Something that perhaps may be accepted when the last gnuttorna detail are being hunted.

To work with the cameras is no different from working with a 5 d Mark III, the difference in handling is primarily that, as already mentioned, sounds smaller. And it feels a bit like you are wasting a lot of megapixels in the» usual «photography because it might mess a bit with long shutter speeds and do not use a tripod.

Rate smart button to compare two images next to each other remains from the 5 d Mark III and feels almost more relevant on these two cameras. In all cases the ability to compare two images against each other when they are zoomed in, you can then confirm if the sharpness set where you wanted to or not. This becomes more important because the more details the high resolution image is inexorably reveals a misplaced focus. To give your images a stjärmarkering (or two, three, four or five) is also a good finesse. It makes you directly in the camera can select which images you think are good, important or just worth saving.

Image quality

It is, after all, this is what is interesting in these cameras because it is the sensor that is the big thing. And it’s good, resampling against Nikon D810 is hefty and it is in the class with medium format cameras in terms of the number of pixels.

A high resolution offers many advantages, lower noise, easier to prune, large files for those who want to work a lot with the pictures and, above all, great detail.

And here the dots Canon thus quite correct. At high ISO performance it also good. In class with Nikon D810, which in turn is a notch below the worst ones 1DX and D4S.

With regard to the dynamic range of the cameras so the slightly after D810 with what you can pick up the sensor’s overall dynamism.

It might, however, be able to wish for the ability to slightly higher ISO.Now stop the cameras at 25 600, while its closest competitor, Sony A7R II goes up to over 100 000. It’s probably a result of Canon’s commitment to maximum image quality. You need to shoot with the sensitivities over 25 600, it is perhaps not this camera you should have. There is still some way to go until the high sensitivity and high resolution go hand in hand.

These cameras also require really good optics to utilize sensor.

This is not two cameras for everyone, don’t even think Canon. They are intended for photographers who demand the highest possible detail and resolution without having to move to medium format cameras. Even if they are built for the specific purpose it will obviously going to use them for other purposes, for example, we have already seen the Canon amdassadören Brutus Östling photograph a concert with them, but an optimal reportage or sportkamera is not in any way.

In addition, if you need to shoot a lot with your camera so it’s probably something else to turn. But for nature, still life, commercial or portrait photographers, this is a very interesting alternative to a medium format camera, mainly because the price tag is on a completely different level.
