TEST: When Canon took their first tentative steps into the mirror free world with EOS M judgment became hard. With the new EOS M3 are enough part that it was this camera Canon made his debut with the mirror-free.
When you grab the new Canon EOS M3, you get the feeling that it was like this that many had wanted to be the first EOS M, would look and feel like. Canon’s first attempt to impress with a mirror loose got quite many testers to Pooh-Pooh. Ergonomics was not what one could wish for and autofokusens speed was not that impressed. Probably the verdict was hard because it was Canon at the camera too – one that traditional businesses have a lot to live up to. But with the new EOS M3, it looks like you’ve thought about a lot.
New heart, new brain
All major components inside the camera is replaced. The sensor is the same as sitting in the new mirror reflex cameras Canon 750D and 760D, which means that it is a newly developed 24.2 megapixelssensor, CMOS type sensor can be considered the heart of the camera may be enough to accept that you call the processor of the camera’s brain. Also it is exchanged in M3, now sits a Digic 6-processor in the camera, and also see the two new entry-level cameras 750D and 760D.
The combination of the new sensor and Digic 6 processor provides an ISO range extending from 100 up to 12 800 ISO.
The autofocus was the weakest point in the predecessor EOS M, therefore, is of course also fokusmodulen it replaced in M3. The new fokusmodulen is called Hybrid CMOS AF III that we also find in 750D and 760D. In large part, one can therefore say that the M3 is a boxed version of these two cameras, with another bayonet and a more streamlined format. According to Canon themselves, this new fokusmodul be up to six times faster than the last. Something that may be needed.
More serious external
EOS M was both the controls and the outer directed more toward beginners. But M3 has a slightly more serious approach than its predecessor. A program wheel was added, so also an exposure compensation and a function button, if you look at the top side of the camera. Two direct buttons have appeared even on the back, one for the focus/exposure lock and a to zoom in on the screen to set the focus properly.
Ergonomics is also significantly improved. Where M was a little svårgreppad and halkig is the M3 downtrend in the hand. A true and real grip is at hand, and in combination with the small thumb rest on the back it is no problem to get a firm grip on the camera. The shell has a matte surface with good friction if it wants to grab the camera in any way other than in the grip.
The screen has got a Tiltable screen that so clearly flippas up 180 degrees to take them in a simple way. It, however, goes only to angle 45 degrees downward. It would not have been wrong by 90 degrees, but it is possible to live with 45 degrees as well. Not to mention is that the screen can also be used to control the camera functions because it is a touch screen.
Worth mentioning is also the hot shoe contacts now have electronic viewfinders.
The new focus module is quite clear – fortunately – a substantial lift from the former. If it’s six times faster that Canon itself States, is unclear, but it is considerably faster than the EOS M in all cases. However, I would not want to go so far as to claim that it is remarkably fast: in comparison to the previous Yes, md, in comparison with other mirror loose system, no. Many of those who have developed mirror loose for a long time as Olympus and Panasonic, are much faster when it comes to focussing.
But Canon’s autofocus module, doing their jobs in a satisfactory manner, then it becomes an approved at that point. Would you also help the autofocus on the stack, you can choose to have constant autofocus, that it focuses on what lies at the focus point, regardless if you press the shutter button and enable the focus or not. It allows the focus goes a little faster, since the focus is usually pretty close to where it should be when you lift the camera to take a picture.
Easier for the beginner
For the convenience of those who are not so used to shoot or can all the terms but still want to be able to experiment creatively with the camera, Canon has stopped in program mode, Creativ Assists are marked with a star on the program wheel and allows the user to choose between different creative adjustments color saturation, exposure, contrast and color saturation in specific colors. Adjustments appear immediately on the screen which makes it is easy to see what result you will get. So even though the camera’s appearance is more directed towards an advanced or expert user, so Canon has not forgotten the beginners – smart, it widens the camera application. There are also several other automatic modes that work well for those who do not really have control of aperture and shutter yet.
M3 has so clear a movie mode. In basic mode, it is set to auto exposure, but it is also possible to choose manual exposure for those who want to check their filming more. A good initiative when the camera has autofocus and a soft lenses with STM-motor is really pleasant to shoot with. If you want to have more than 25 images per second do you settle for 720 p, that HD, and will then receive 50 frames per second.
The screen on the EOS M3 is raising the experience of the camera a lot, such as browse between captured pictures is easy with the touch screen. By to pinch or pull out can you enlarge the pictures or zoom out to see more images. This is much faster than having to press buttons.
The same thing applies when you scroll through the menus or select the focus point. Especially given that the keys are a bit in the flattest team. Most, however, goes good press anyway, but the play button and the video record button that sits on the edge of the thumb grip, is a bit too slow. It is difficult to know if one printed on them or not and the feeling is quite imprecise.
Play button must also press on when to enable wifi. When you are in playback mode, press the top button of the 4-way buttons to start the wifi menu. Unfortunately that was not the connection completely stable and it bothered a little when I would connect my smartphone at the camera. But once I got the connection to work so it was no problem to transfer images to your phone or remotely control the camera.
Pictures that M3 churning out is good, the increased resolution will give more details in the images. But when it comes to dynamic range, it may unfortunately delete on foot in comparison to other cameras. Compare with Nikons D7200 which we tested in our last issue distinguishes it about two steps. Compare it with other mirror loose with APS-C sensors from Sony and Samsung sets it apart slightly less but still around 1.5 step. Tappet is most noticeable when to lift the shadow areas in underexposed pictures.
The quality of the videos is good, possibly a little överskärpta if you detaljstuderar them, But for the common use, it is not the problem – it looks good.
Canon EOS M3 is a camera that will probably fit many. A compact size with good ergonomics are always nice and can in many respects simplifies shooting.
The fact that it jumped up a notch in functionality, I also believe favors the camera. It might still not quite able to compete against other manufacturers in speed, but it has instead a larger sensor than Olympus and Panasonic’s mirror loose cams, which have their advantages.
