TEST: Samsung NX1 offers some exciting things. Among other things, the digital viewfinder, really good, but also prompting: the camera can scoop images in 28 megapixels at 15 frames per second.
Samsung is not usually the manufacturer you are looking for when it comes to DSLRs. That is exactly why it is fun to see how Samsung opted to design their camera – with something of a mixture of different camera types, much like a hybrid of mirror free and DSLR.
Samsung NX1 is the first camera with a sensor in the APS-C format as high resolution as the 28 megapixels. ISO properties specified at between 100 and 51200 ISO. The camera has also been equipped with tilting touchscreen and the ability to shoot in 4 k resolution.
Slim in the hand
The rubber-coated grip on the camera feels really good and fits nicely for handset, actually quite slim for those who do not have big hands. The comfort, I must give a little plus because it’s so comfortable to stay in.
However, the control location is not quite optimal. Some buttons are slightly sunken, small and difficult to touch directly, for example, the AEL button or button to get the light on the top and smaller screen. The trigger does not have any precise sense, but perhaps most regrettable is that the wifi button is located at the back of the camera right where you can reach it with your thumb – and I can assume that this particular feature is that you do not use when you are in a shooting situation.
Well, on the other hand, is the lock button for program selection slider that allows me to choose whether to lock or unlock the revolution. You need never be afraid of the slider changes.
However, I think it is a pity that you can not set up the use of all the buttons the way you want to, I would like to see increased opportunities for key features, all designed to build up the buttons ‘ settings to suit one’s photography.
What is extra fun with Samsung NX1 is that it is the only mirror free camera actually has a second display on their top side, just like on a regular digital SLR.
But Samsung has chosen to do something cool: they have taken in a little extra when it comes to many specifications, including the highest resolution to be an APS-C sensor, but even a quad-core processor to handle the pixels that are flying in from 15 frames per second in 28 megapixels.
This cream is also evident when using the camera, it feels very responsive, so quick in doing things, and you never have to wait for it because it has something that it performs (Yes, possibly for removing noise a picture if you have taken a picture with long-term exposure and high sensitivity).
One of the places that perhaps it is most noticeable on the management of the touch-sensitive screen. Screen of 3 inches is Amoled-type and has 1.04 million pixels. For example, looking at the images so you can quickly flick your finger to change the image, quickly zooming in images by using two fingers, and it all works really good. The camera is so fast that you never have to wait for the image or disturbed by the choppers. The same is true in shooting mode when you press on the various icons to adjust the various settings — it just works.
On the screen, you can also set the focus point, take pictures and select the area to follow with follow focus. Also, this update is really quick.
Extra good is also the ability to set up so that you can see all the icons and settings on the screen, it can easily be many – but it can be quite useful to quickly see these.
Pure specification wise, so should the hybrid autofocus be horrible fast with their 209 focus points. The advantage of all points is that the surface of the picture is taken up to around 90 per cent, and not just limited to a small area.
However, I do not feel the focus more quickly than generally for this kind of camera. In some States with low light you’ll find it not quite right, but looking for a tag to select focus, such as indoors at night time.
You can probably still get, for the camera have any smart tool to get into it with manual focus, more smart settings for it to work with your type of photography, and the opportunity to see the edge contrast where the focus is at the moment.
However, Samsung NX1 sometimes problems to find the right with white balance, which means that you may help it along by either selecting a white balance mode that works, or you can set the color temperature manually. I was not fully friend with this in all situations.
Today’s electronic viewfinder has now become so great that it is sometimes difficult to determine whether it is just an electronic or analog. It usually reveal most cameras then refresh the image – it is more the rule than the exception that the picture may flicker or have a slight delay in the picture.
But Samsung NX1 is the camera that has all the elements to fool the eye. The specified delay time is 5 milliseconds, which surely also true, for the delay is non-existent. The resolution is 2.36 million pixels, which in turn is a resolution that gives a real image. Really good that is.
It is only in certain situations that the viewfinder does not manage to keep up with (or screen for that matter) and it is by change of lighting conditions, both in strength and in color temperature.
The properties of the video is really nice. In addition to the record button for the video feels something displaced so, Samsung has invested in the ability to record video in 4 k.
There are two modes to choose from, DCI 4 k (Digital Cinema Initiatives) in resolution 4096 x 1716, or UHD (Ultra High Definition) of 3840 x 2160.Image quality for video that is the DCI position really well, whereas UHD mode is slightly worse. But is it really cool to be able to record video in 4 k.It is also possible to output the 4 k video via HDMI in 8-bit 4:2: 0.
Video in full HD 1080 p also looks good. Fun is also that it is possible to fade in sequence to get a better looking home on film.
See however, up with the memory card you use, both for filming in full-HD and 4 k. The thing is that it apparently can record video to a memory card that is not fast enough, but the camera tells about it.
I was slightly surprised when I would open the movie in my computer and it was damaged because the memory card did not support the write speed for high definition video. This, it is to be hoped that the Samsung grabs with a future firmware update.
Suitable for very
Taking photos with the Samsung NX1 is working right fine in many situations. In quick modes such as sports, the autofocus works well and hanging with fine. Extra nice it is to have the screen to set the focus point, and be able to follow the object.
That playful camera has also a lot to offer. There are some filters and refinements that make you can spin off a bit with the effects, but also all the possibilities you can imagine to set the camera for different types of photography. In this way, the camera is right in its wide use, much due to the high-speed burst shooting but also all of the settings that the camera offers.
In a way, NX1 a lot of exciting features. Built-in wifi seems like a no-brainer from Samsung with their smartphones, and with NX1 can easily connect the camera with the latest wifi version, a process accelerated by the built-in bluetooth module.
The camera also has a built-in USB3-port for faster transmission of images to the computer, which is the same port to charge the camera battery.
The whole camera is also weather sealed and made of a metal alloy, which means that sustainability is fine and the possibility to use the camera in bad weather is good. This is also something that suggests that Samsung is aimed at the higher school of photographers.
Despite the fact that the camera has the highest resolution for APS-C cameras with their sensor on 28 megapixels, so is it not worse in their image quality when shooting in high sensitivity. This is very good, because the two parts usually go hand in hand – high resolution of a sensor is the same size usually gives a poorer image quality at higher ISO values.
When we tested the sensor with lens Samsung 16-50 mm/2-2.8 S ED IOS, we got a really sharp images with high detail.
The photos also look really good right out of the camera, so it is only to congratulate the Samsung to a good image processing processor along with a well-built camera.
The camera has a lot of it is needed for normal photography. Speed is one thing that is really fun, especially with the resolution. To make the settings via the touch screen is really easy to manage, and easy going.
The electronic viewfinder is one of the best I’ve seen, and really nice to use. And then I’m still the one who find an analogue viewfinder is preferred. You could say that this is where it starts to happen on that front.
The camera fits over the law many photographers, but perhaps it is a little more advanced in his photography, or need the fast burst shooting. But by and large it is a camera that is capable of much, and fit many.
Above all, it can be an exciting alternative for those who want to harness the power of film in high definition 4 k resolution – for it is the really good at.
