Sony A7 II – Near a Real Hit

TEST: a small camera with a large image sensor has well enthusiasts and professionals called out for some time now. With his A7 series, Sony has come up with its answer to the desire. Now with the upgraded A7 II so it has been very close to a real hit when it comes to features, formats, and image quality.

Sony’s A7 series has become popular for their pliability and its sensible features. Previously there were three different cameras, one of which sought the maximum resolution of A7R, one for those who wanted to focus more on moving image A7S and one for those who just wanted to have a camera to photograph with A7. A7 had no specific direction as to the other two, because it had perhaps the widest audience of the three cameras. And it was liked by many, both professional photographers who was looking for a smaller camera with high picture quality and by enthusiasts who wanted a good camera with 35 mm sensor.

There are still three models in Sony’s A7 series, but as you can imagine has audience favorite A7 been upgraded on several fronts. Depending on how you are attacking Sony’s new A7 II so you will notice different things out of the news.

Do you have a more palpable attitude so the first thing you will notice the new grip and the new location of the trigger. The new grip is deeper and bigger and much better ergonomics than the A7. On top of the new grip is now the trigger instead of it, as before, was placed on top of the camera body. This enables the finger ends up much more naturally on the trigger. In front of the footprint is the redesigned input wheel, also it has ended up in a better and more natural place. Both the front and the rear input wheel has a new design that is more reminiscent of how these wheels tend to look at other cameras. An advantageous design update, I think. To get a better grip and it’s easier to use them.

If you are a little more analytically inclined and therefore read on a bit about the camera first is the biggest news you will encounter on the image stabilizer. Sony has stopped an image stabilization adjusts to five axes. According to them you should be able to get sharp images throughout the four and a half-step slower shutter speeds.

Revamped autofocus

Sony will also have managed to optimize the autofocus from its predecessor, so it should have been up to thirty percent faster and one and a half times better on the following focus. If Sony’s alleged numbers is true is unclear, but the focus is fast. The combination of phase detection and contrast focus works fine.

There are few cameras that have a solid list of focus modes that Sony A7 II has. One of the modes that should have been improved, therefore the following focus mode. And it works pretty good. As long as it focuses on not moving too fast and too much in zigzag over the viewfinder image to hang A7 II with good, better than what you would expect, but in some situations, so drop it away the man has put a focus on a few tenths if it makes a great movement, it could be enough to miss the sharpness of an image. On a football field or similar where many things are moving in the image at the same time, the camera also a little confused, but it is almost too much to wish that it should solve such a situation without problems. In comparison with many other cameras with the same features will take care of itself very good.

Before giving me on my little negative comment about Sony A7 II’s viewfinder so I’ll give the praise. The electronic viewfinder is really good, the update is fast and image reproduction is sharp. Benefits of an electronic viewfinder is that you can get more information in the viewfinder than what is available with an optical. With a few quick clicks that can be performed with the camera at eye can produce a histogram that shows the image’s exposure, an electronic spirit level or just a clean viewfinder image. Very useful and nice actually.

But now for something which is actually missvisad criticism, but I would like to express it anyway. The fact is that the automatic eye sensor to switch between the viewfinder and the screen is very sensitive. Unfortunately, I discovered this at a time when it was very frustrating. Namely, when I was hanging out from a cliff face in one hand and stretched out the camera in the other arm in order to get the right angle on the picture I wanted to take. The only problem was that when the camera was in the right place so extinct screen to my arm shaded it on about 15 cm distance. Of course, I had been able to go into the menu and change to static screen viewfinder, so turn off the control unit. But it did not I do in that situation. So even if it was disruptive right there and then it’s maybe not a fatal error. But it can be good to know that the sensor is for the more sensitive side.

The screen goes to angle, as well as on the other A7-cameras is actually an advantage. The more you use the screen as a viewfinder, the more natural it feels when you really want to have full control of the entire picture, it is of course easier and more stable to hold the camera in the eye. But when to» «shooting from the hip, it’s very convenient to be able to tilt the screen to see properly. Even better would be if it also went to tilt sideways. But then, maybe one of the advantages of the screen disappear. It is very thin to be a folding screen. It is not something you think about at first, but it is precisely because it basically is as thin as the screen on which the standard camera that can’t tilt it out. Well done Sony!

Robust stabilization

A7 II’s new image stabilization makes the reason for its name. If you achieve exactly four and a half-step slower shutter speeds without the mixing-blur is difficult to measure. But what is clear is that one can use much slower shutter speeds than would be possible otherwise. We had to borrow a 70-400 f/4,5-5.6 G SSM II along with the camera and it was good to take sharp pictures at full focal length, hand-held, despite the faint light. Stabilization can turn on and off in the menu system and it is also possible to choose whether to work automatically by sensing the focal length of the lens or whether to enter the focal length itself. For most lenses works great to let the camera do with automatics. If you often want to tweak the image stabilizer, or turn it on, so you can put the menu on one of the buttons.

A7 II has four buttons that can be programmed, and the choices you have for these buttons are many. By and large, you can choose to adjust almost anything through them, so no matter how you work, you can get the camera’s button layout to fit.

A7 II has Wi-Fi built right into the House. It’s something you don’t see on many cameras with 35 mm sensor. Often due to the manufacturers mean that it is difficult to combine a good wifiräckvidd with a shell of metal. But in Sony A7 II, Sony has replaced the previous plastic caps on the camera’s front-top to magnesium, but still managed to get to a good wifi. Although perhaps not the House is like sturdy as a DSLR in the Pro class. But it in no way feels plasticky or flimsy. WiFi also starts more and more seem like an obvious choice for cameras. For the working photographer means during a photo shoot, for example, can send a picture to their clients for believes, or you can just post up a picture on any social network to view what you are doing right now.

More for the filmmaker

A7s is the designated video specialist among Sony’s 35 mm cameras, but A7 II has a few additions that make it a little more interesting for those who also work with video. You can now film in the format of XAVC’s and picture profile gamma S-log2.

The first news provides the opportunity for more movie files with lower compression while the other news gives a greater dynamic range for a better material for finishing

Image quality

Because the sensor is the same as in the previous model so no different picture quality from its predecessor. Instead, it is in handling and other functions that change has taken place. But the sensor is unmaintained is nothing you have to hang over the lip, as it gives the best results we’ve tested, leaving aside the more high-resolution Nikon D810 and Sony A7R.

Conclusion

Already A7 was a really good camera and with the additions and news that shows up in the sequel it becomes even better. The quality of the image itself is not altered when the sensor is the same. But it’s nothing to cry about then it gives really good image files.

On the other hand, extends the usability in low light with the help of image stabilization, improved auto focus makes its to it also. If you want to additionally record the video so it has gotten even more opportunities to the handsome production.

The new ergonomics also fits in well among the other news and highlights the handling of the camera a couple of snap.
