Sony A7R II: High Definition in Pocket Size

TEST: Sony A7R II is Sony’s new weapon in the hunt for the really detailed images. 42.4 megapixels is really high resolution. You can also shoot in 4 k and that all this is tucked in a convenient format makes this an exciting camera.

A7r II is the first camera receiving a backlit sensor in this size and with this resolution. It helps to improve image quality in low light and therefore has Sony chosen to raise the ISO-level up to 102400 ISO for still images. Do you film one must settle for 25600.

The film can do in 4 k, which of course makes the camera interesting for many. Films in standard 4 k used the entire width of the sensor, but you can also choose to film in super 35 which crop sensor slightly sideways. In the camera, you also fasdetekterande a new focus and a new shutter construction. More about these later.

Button removal

A7r II has a same avtryckarförflyttning, change of grip and input the wheels as A7 II. This means that the input the wheels become narrower and with higher friction. The grip has become somewhat narrower and deeper, and have been a steeper angle up against the camera body in their upper end.

In General, one can say that the exterior changes on A7R II is the same as was on the A7 (II) for the launch of the last year. Footprint is sitting on top of the grip instead of on the top of the House, something that makes it sit much more naturally positioned relative to how to grab it.

Program knob have also been given a lock button on the top that allows the part gets a little bängligare to turn on, then lock button must be held down while you turn – but that it does not accidentally switch itself involuntarily.

Sensor magic

Magic might be a strong word, but Sony has done a few things with their sensor in comparison with earlier models that makes it special. Among other things, as mentioned earlier, it is the first that is backlit with this resolution, which improves the dark properties. But it also has a conventional aluminum threads in the sensor replaced with copper, which should increase signal speed with three-and-a-half times (compared to its predecessor) and improve noise performance due to fewer disruptions.

If you can’t wait and you want to know exactly how good the new sensor is, you jump back to between the title » image quality «.»

Reduce vibrations

As in Canon’s high-resolution cameras 5DS, 5DS has taken to the mechanical action to reduce the detaljförstörande vibrations. This was a problem in A7R, mainly with longer focal lengths when shutter created vibrations which could not exploit the resolution fully.

That is why stop structure remade. If you want to reduce the vibration further, you can turn off the mechanical shutter and use only the electronic, providing a quiet setting in the camera and no vibrations from the shutter. It is also possible to combine the two ends techniques and run with an electronic first curtain and mechanical other curtain. In comparison with the Canon has the Sony advantage that they do not have any mirror, to mess with. In Canon’s case, they have also been building on mirror mechanism to reduce vibrations.

Better focus

In A7R II, Sony stopped into a fasdetekterande fasdetekterande of focus points on the sensor that covers 45% of the sensor’s surface (the focus points are 399).

Certainly doesn’t sound the percentage so high, it is lower than, for instance, Samsung’s NX1 or Sony’s own APS-C cameras. But the point is that we compare with APS-C cameras that have a smaller sensor. There is no other camera with full frame sensor which af points has greater coverage. And it shows when you’re shooting, it’s no problem to put the focus where you want it. Focus speed may not be violently impressive – it’s okay, but not much more than that.

However, the new focus module more pleasant news, which among other things can make Canonfotografer which is hungry for more resolution and therefore checked 5DS or 5DS R interested. With the new phase detecting the focus can have functioning autofocus with significantly simpler adapters than what went before. Among other things, you can use other Sony lens without the adapter that has a contained SLT-mechanism and therefore is quite large and bänglig.

But it’s interesting for photographers with other brands is that the auto focus also will work with for example Canonobjektiv if you have an adapter with electronic connections, such as a Metabones adapter. Unfortunately, we never came across such an adapter during our test, so we could not try, but what our research has shown is that the combination should work fine.

You are sitting today on a collection of sharp, Canon or Nikon windows and want a higher resolution in your body so there is no need to stick to the manufacturer of the camera man has for the moment. Sony has suddenly become an option for you.

Small with something great

When Sony A7 first came out so talking a lot about how small it was, and still had a full frame sensor. The size is something that got several to be lured to Sony’s full-frame cameras. Perhaps, you might think that the argument is trite at this point. They have launched several cameras in the same size and all have had full-frame sensors.

But the argument gets a new power with A7R II. To perform pictures in this resolution that looks this good looking, with a camera that largely goes down in your Pocket (if you don’t have a lens attached, anyway) and that weighs that little is really impressive. Add to that you can also shoot in 4 k in the format that gives good possibilities for finishing. If you want to have this resolution and picture quality would otherwise have only two options, either any of the Canon models, or you will get a medium format camera and then still can’t shoot in 4 k.

And then it became suddenly very much heavier, larger, and more expensive.

New sökaroptik

A change made since the A7 II launched is that you replaced the optics in the viewfinder, now sits where the Zeiss lenses, magnification is 0, 78x which is the highest in any full-frame camera. In addition to the lenses are the same XGA OLED viewfinder in A7R II in A7 II. It seems Sony have applied» why change a winning formula «-tank. For there is nothing wrong with the viewfinder in A7R II.

The other side of the coin

The many innovations of the A7R II seems to affect the battery life adversely. During the test, I saw that the camera was on a charge faster than other cameras in the same class. The problem is that there isn’t really any other cameras in the same class with which to compare, but I felt sorry battery life as a little too short, but maybe it’s a bit like with smartphones: the more they can do, the more often you get to download them, and Sony has unfortunately size against him here, the capacity is much larger than other cameras in the same size but the space of the battery is the same size. Compare it with other professional cameras, they have much larger battery capacity.

Another thing that pulls down Sonyn lite is that the menu system is somewhat complicated. What lies beneath which menu is not completely obvious, and it takes a while before you’ve learned all» exception «in menus and can make the adjustments you want directly without having to scroll through the many Ribbon to find the setting you are looking for.

Image quality

Compared to the predecessor has A7R II received an update of the resolution which of course increases the detail in the images. It may not be noticeable until you look at the pictures in the magnification. But the higher resolution gives the other benefits, such as reduced noise and greater opportunities to crop images. The dynamic range and noise level, these have improved a few notch. A notch which is about as large as the hope of resolution.

Summary

A7r II is a major upgrade to its predecessor. The resolution is lifting a few notch and the autofocus is better. Above all, the ability to use other lenses than Sony’s own with an adapter is a nice feature for photographers who currently use other brands.

It’s hard not to be impressed by all the capacity that the Sony manages to put in such a small format as A7R II actually is. High resolution stills, effective image stabilization and 4 k filming is impressive features regardless of the format of the camera.

The camera should primarily attract wildlife photographers and landscape photographers who work far from the convenient road network, where every ounce is important to save. But even city Studio photographer has a lot to get here because the resolution and picture quality is so good.
