Sony RX100 IV: Unnecessary Performance

TEST: Last step in Sony’s sensor development gives us an electronic shutter at 1/32000-part and high speed imaging with 1000 frames per second. This, together with the 4 k video, faster continuous shooting and an improved autofukus think Sony is so enticing that they price fourth-generation RX100 to entirely new heights.

It has been three years since Sony RX100 was presented. It was a really welcome camera that got together a small format, larger sensor and zoom lens. Therefore it is great that Sony has not been idle, but continued to develop the camera and released a new version each subsequent year (2013, 2014 and 2015 now). The RX100 II got a vari-angle screen and hot shoe. The next model got a new lens and no Flash shoe in favor for the viewfinder and where we are today – to the exterior. This year’s offering instead the RX100 IV biggest upgrade to date when it comes to features.

Fast sensor

Sony has developed a sensor capable of scanning the image from the sensor faster. For one, today, normal sensor camera needs to read the image after the mechanical shutter has been closed. In a lot of cameras, you can choose not to use the mechanical shutter (it is called electronic shutter), but it means that the whole picture is not exposed at the same time. The effect of it is visible if there is anything that moves. Say you go on a road and photo-graferar a fence that stands along the way. With an electronic shutter will the planks in the fence to lean in the direction you go. The upper part of the image is exposed before lower part.

Many video formats

There are, to say the least, many different varieties of video recording with RX100 IV. With 4 k video options are a little more manageable when the elections then only stands between two different levels of quality. For full-hd, you can choose from 25, 50 or 100 images/s (in mode» pal «), which with 25 and 50 frames/s also possible to choose between two powerful variations of electronic image stabilization. Electronic image stabilization means that the slicer is cropped to compensate for shake. The resolution will be somewhat worse, but the result is impressive. This can also be done afterwards in good video editing software.

The most useful mode for slow motion video, I would say is the standard mode for 100 fps then you get with audio, and afterwards the possibility to choose what to play in normal, half or quarter speed, depending on if the end result will be played by 50 or 25 frames/s.

Another useful feature for those who edit their video is that it is possible to choose Sony’s so-called S-Log2-gamma.It uses the sensor looks much more details in the dark than we normally would be visible in an image. Anyone who knows ljusat up a still image photographed in raw form.With film, there would be tremendous amounts of data if you saved it as raw formats (something that is actually going to do about the keener the types of professional video cameras). The alternative is to allow the contrast to be real low so that it is dark in the picture becomes gray.It looks terrible, but the beauty is that the details in the dark are preserved. And the idea is that you should turn to the contrast afterwards so it will be nice.

Conclusion

Sony RX100 IV is a camera with so much performance that doesn’t quite fit in its small format. This is certainly a matter of taste, but for me it is a received camera not a welding machine. Therefore, it is natural that in a developing hostile way say that the predecessor was just as good.

It is also the highest natural to think about the price. Model I and II cost around 6 500 kr when they were launched. When the third was released last year, the price to 8 000 SEK and with this year’s model jumps the price up to 11 500 KR. that is five thousand dollars more than what RX100 III costs today. At the same time, RX100 III is far from a cheap camera so it’s still an affluent audience Sony are targeting, which means that it may not be as sensitive to such a big price difference. The future will tell if Sony will have lower prices.
