It is bordered by Maryland to the north, Pennsylvania to the west, and New Jersey and the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south, respectively. Delaware’s capital city is Dover and its most populous city is Wilmington. The state has a total area of 1,982 square miles, making it the second smallest state in terms of land area. Delaware is a relatively small state with an estimated population of 975,033 people as of 2019. It has one major metropolitan area known as Greater Wilmington which includes cities such as Newark and Middletown. In addition to its metro area, Delaware contains many smaller towns and villages scattered throughout its landscape. The terrain of Delaware consists mostly of flat plains with some rolling hills in certain areas such as along the Atlantic Coastal Plain region. The climate in Delaware is generally humid subtropical with hot summers and mild winters that can bring snowfall during certain months of the year. Overall, Delaware has much to offer visitors including great restaurants, museums, historical sites, parks and recreation areas, beaches along the Atlantic Ocean coastline and more. The original area codes for Delaware were 302 and 226, which were established in 1947 and served the state until 1995. In 1995, a new 302 area code was introduced to serve parts of northern Delaware including Wilmington and Dover. The newest area code in Delaware is 220, which was created in 2019 to serve parts of Sussex County. All three area codes are used for both local and long distance calling throughout Delaware as well as other parts of North America depending on your carrier service provider. For example, people living in Wilmington will use either 302 or 226 when making local calls while those living in Dover will use 302 when dialing locally within their city limits. Similarly, people living in Lewes will use 302 for local calling while those living in Seaford will use 220 for local calls within their city limits. Additionally, all three area codes are used for long distance calling throughout Delaware as well as other parts of North America depending on your carrier service provider.
