The gardens of Marqueyssac
One look at photos is enough to say that the gardens of Marqueyssac in the French department of Dordogne are definitely worth a visit. The facility is located on a rock ledge at a height of 130 meters and is a real work of art. In addition to a great view of the surrounding landscape, there is a labyrinth of perfectly shaped box trees that extends over the entire property. The garden was originally designed by André Le Nôtre, who learned his trade from the royal horticulturist of Versailles. In the beginning, the garden was characterized by a strict symmetry that is typical of royal horticulture. Today the symmetry has given way to organic shapes and curved paths that provide variety. The fairytale garden has been open to the public since 1997 and attracts tourists from all over the world.
The Majorelle Garden
If there is one garden that is on many people’s bucket lists, it is probably the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech. The botanical garden is not only famous for its enchanting variety of plants, but also for the cobalt blue house that the French artist Jacques Majorelle once had built. In 1980 the garden was bought by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé and served as a source of inspiration from then on. The unique “Majorelle Blue” in particular inspired the fashion designer to create many collections. After his death in 2008, his ashes were even scattered in the rose garden of the Jardin Majorelle. The legacy of Yves Saint Laurent is open to the public today and attracts over 600,000 visitors annually.
